Synopsis:
Makoto Sato (Mirai Moriyama) accidentally
reunites with his old friend, Nanase (Atsushi Shinohara). At that time, Nanase
felt that his life was at the bottom and far behind his friends. This makes
Sato look back at the life he's been living.
Sato works at an advertising company. At a
party at his office, he meets a woman who turns out to be a porn star. The
woman feels that the life she's living is not the life she dreamed of. Sato
starts to think about his life and how his friends have achieved their dreams.
Memories resurface when Sato has to deal
with his girlfriend who is waiting for certainty about their relationship. However,
Sato seems unable to make a decision about his life and ends up ending their
relationship just like that. The woman, who he turns out to have known for
quite a while, has also become more mature, unlike when he first met her.
The story goes back to Sato's memories of
his true love, Kaori. How they met and the relationship they had. Until one
day, Kaori leaves Sato alone.
Do all these memories make Sato realize he
needs to grow up?
Review:
We Couldn't Become Adults is a film
adaptation of the novel "Bokutachi wa Minna Otona ni Narenakatta" by
Moegara, published in 2016. The story presented is actually quite simple, about
the feeling of loss and the wounds of the past that haven't healed. But,
viewers can feel the deep emotions from the story.
The story is presented in an interesting
style using a systematic flashback that can still be enjoyed well. Uniquely,
the scene at the end of the story is the scene we see at the beginning of the
story. This is what makes the storytelling more interesting with all the scenes
that fit into logic.
Every character that appears has its own
connection in Sato's past memories. Viewers are invited to enter all the
memories that the main character has gone through. Even the uncertainty of the
reason for Kaori's departure makes viewers understand the feelings and wounds
felt by Sato.
The acting and chemistry of the actors are
very good. Especially Mirai Moriyama, who plays Sato in various timelines. Mirai
Moriyama can display a variety of characters that look different, making
viewers feel the development of the character.
The
wardrobe and makeup used are also quite good. We can see a significant
difference in each timeline. Even though the character of Sato is played by the
same person in each time.
The color composition and camera movement
are also done very well. Some expressive details are captured well on screen. The
choice of music and sound effects is also appropriate in each scene.
Overall, this film has a deep message. Suitable
for those who like films with touching drama themes.
Memorable Scene:
Sato and Kaori drive around with no clear
direction or destination. This scene shows the depth of Sato's love for Kaori. So
wherever he goes, even without a definite destination, he will still do it as
long as he's with Kaori.
Memorable Dialogue:
"Everyone else keeps growing older, but we stay the same."
Ending:
Cliffhanger
Recommendation:
Must Watch
