Synopsis of Virgin:
Biyan (Laudya Cynthia Bella) is a high school teenager who has two close friends, Stella (Ardina Rasti) and Katie (Angie Virgin). Stella is the daughter of a wealthy, successful politician, but she lacks affection, which makes her get caught up in a free-spirited lifestyle. Angie lives a modest life and really wants to be able to live like her friends. Biyan comes from an unhappy family, where her father is a cheater and makes her mother depressed.
Katie decides to sell her virginity and become a sex worker to meet her needs. Katie is helped by Stella, who has already entered that world. Biyan, although not entirely approving of it, can't stop her two friends. However, Biyan still tries to maintain her virginity.
Stella, who really wants to be an actress, decides to participate in a film casting. Her subpar acting makes her fail to get the role. However, she doesn't know that Biyan, who actually likes the world of art, literature, and acting, gets the role. Biyan decides not to tell Stella and rejects the offer.
Problems arise that make their friendship a little shaky. Stella is angry at Katie, who thinks she is not talented. Katie is worried about getting pregnant because one of her clients accidentally came inside her. Stella is also angry at Biyan for rejecting the acting offer, which makes Luna, a friend they don't like, get the role. However, the argument makes their friendship even stronger.
A big problem arises when the car they borrowed from a mafia disappears. They have to try to find money to replace the car. Biyan is faced with a dilemma to sell her virginity.
Will Biyan be able to survive?
Review of Virgin:
Virgin raises a theme and story idea that was quite daring at
the time. Where sex was still a taboo subject to talk about. However, the
director dared to bring this theme to the surface and show that free-spirited
lifestyles do exist and happen around us. It's just that many people turn a
blind eye to it.
The story is presented systematically and is easy to understand. The development of each character is also done well. Although the story sometimes feels like it's broken and shifts without a smooth transition, making the story less flowing.
The cinematography, camera movement, and color composition are quite good. The soundtrack and music selection are also appropriate for each scene. This makes the film present a visually pleasing presentation.
The acting from the cast is also very good. The main and supporting actors play their roles according to their portions. This is the first film that made me fall in love with Laudya Cynthia Bella's acting. The expressions and interpretations she shows through the character of Biyan are quite good.
There are some scenes that feel less believable, like when the literature teacher suddenly enters and performs in class. Also, the school where they go seems to care less about their students, because there are so many problematic children there. Plus, the story seems to revolve around the same characters, making it seem like the world only contains them.
Previously, this film was so captivating when watched in its time. However, when trying to rewatch it in a different time, a little bit of a cringe sensation is felt from the scenes. Especially during the scene where Maryx has a birthday, where Biyan suddenly sings on the table to calm down the commotion that's happening. In the real world, we might think, "What is this person doing, singing out of the blue." Hehe. Or when Biyan writes in her diary, because she uses slang, it seems a little strange to hear.
Overall, this film is interesting to watch, especially for
teenagers and parents. This film can be a warning about the world that might
not be paid much attention to. As well as the dangers that can be obtained in
that world.
Memorable Scene:
Stella, disappointed with her friends, decides to lock herself in her house. Biyan and Katie try to lift Stella's spirits. They accidentally have the same idea: to give her information about an ad casting in the newspaper.
From this scene, we can see that in friendship, there will
definitely be arguments and disagreements. However, if the friendship is done
sincerely, there will definitely be no one who wants to hurt each other in
their hearts.
Memorable Dialogue:
"I don't want to lose my virginity."
Ending:
Happy Ending
Recommendation:
Worth to watch
