Synopsis of Mama Retreat:
Mercedes (Annie Gonzales) is preparing to become a mother. On her doctor's advice to address her anxieties, she goes to a secluded location to attend a retreat. The retreat is filled with mothers who are trying to share their anxieties with each other, led by Julie.
Mercedes initially feels like she's not in the right place and doesn't want to share her anxieties. However, Julie manages to convince Mercedes and make her open up. But something strange happens during the communal meal where they eat live insects. Mercedes becomes suspicious and wants to leave the place immediately.
Julie again manages to charm Mercedes and make her stay until
the evening session. Mercedes gets caught in something she didn't expect. Will
Mercedes be able to survive?
Review of Mama Retreat:
Mama Retreat has an interesting story idea and has great potential if it were made into a full-length film. However, it needs to add some details like character backgrounds, story backgrounds that can be a foundation, and other things that enhance the mystery of the story. As for this short film itself, it's been presented well enough, even though there are many things that make this film less memorable.
The story development at the beginning is a little promising, but the conflict development is not strong enough. The story is easy to predict and there's nothing surprising. The ending is made quite interesting with an unexpected plot twist, even though it's not known for sure where the story will go.
The acting from the cast is pretty good, but there's nothing special. The cinematography, color composition, and music used are pretty good. The location used also has good aesthetics.
Overall, this short film is still pretty interesting to watch.
Memorable Scene:
Each member gathers in a circle to do some exercise together. In the process, they are free to express themselves and are asked to shout to release all their anxieties. Mercedes seems to be immersed in the 'freedom' she feels and releases all the burdens in her mind.
In this scene, we see the free expression shown by Mercedes.
Viewers will realize that every woman must have anxieties that she keeps inside
when preparing to become a mother.
Memorable Dialogue:
"You wanna be mom material?"
Ending:
Cliffhanger Ending
Recommendation:
Worth to Watch
